GROUPER

GROUPER FOCUS GROUPS

Focus Groups are small groups that focus on a specific content area. We cycle through two themes each year: Math and Literacy

Math Focus Groups are ongoing for 1st Semester.

FOCUS GROUPS with DEB

This year, I am lucky to work with very small Focus Groups in math. We'll spend time deeply exploring concepts, thinking flexibly about computation,  playing games to build fluency, and working to connect concepts to traditional and alternative algorithms.

Here are some of the things we've looked at so far: Primes, Composites, and Squares; Multiplication arrays, and finding smaller arrays within. Here's an example:

Here we have an array that shows 8x5, but inside of it are arrays made up of 5x5 and 3x5 (which most kids know fairly easily). So 8 x 5 is also (25 + 15). We start with fives because it's an easy number, easy to visualize and to count.

Oh, and when we build this with square tiles (sadly, the image is small rectangles so it's not clear), they can see which of these smaller rectangles in the array is a square. Can you?

MATH FOCUS GROUP WITH JOY

We will be working on a variety of Middle School skills and concepts using group games, visuals, and challenges, working together and  sharing our strategies in a supportive environment. We are working on ratios, and proportions, comparing decimals, fractions and percents, and we will be doing some algebra later in the semester.  11/6: This week we did a roller coaster design challenge which we will complete next week.

SPECTRA ART CONTINUES THURSDAYS IN NOVEMBER and DECEMBER, 11:30 - 1:00.
