special SHOWCASE

February 26

We are having a special visit with a musician from the symphony.

Showcase/Teambuilding is usually the last Tuesday of the month from 12:45 - 1:30!

Showcase is an opportunity for students to showcase something they have done, made, learned, shared with their peers.

Tuesday (3rd - 5th grade)

Focus Groups are small groups that focus on a specific content theme. We cycle through two themes each year: Math and Literacy

SHOW, don't TELL, and have an OPINION already!

This group meets from 9:40-10:30 in the office with Deb and will focus on developing scenes through dialogue, action, and sensory detail as well as learning the argumentation format of simple opinion essays.

We started by creating some crazy battle scenes to argue one side or the other of who would win in a showdown between a microscopic goat that can fly and a giant vampire that can control plants.

Writing Journeys, Group 1

This group meets 9:40 - 10:30 with Joy in Classroom A.  This writing group will explore different writing styles including Personal Narrative, Information Writing, Creative Writing/Poetry, Fictional stories and Persuasive Writing.  We will also play writing games to get students thinking outside the box.  Students will write and share their work each week as well as  give each other positive, constructive feedback.  Writing projects will be sent home to continue during the week.  Please support your student in bringing back their writing each week.

Writing Journeys, Group 2

This group meets 11:15 - 12:05 with Joy in Classroom A.  Our focus is on becoming more fluent writers and to enjoy short writing projects.  We will explore a variety of writing genres with student choice and with lots of encouragement.  We began by doing a 3 minute free write and sharing our stories.  We will learn to give positive, constructive feedback.  My hope is that writing will continue at home during the week.  There may be optional work sent home occasionally.

Welcome Sea Urchins!
Welcome Sea Urchins!

2/5/19  We started our discovery of motion by making rollers and racing them across the classroom.

For the month of February, we are going to be experimenting with motion, potential & kinetic energy, friction and speed.  We will turn our discoveries into a science fair question and project.

For previous weeks', go to Mary's Science Page

Inquiry Groups for Second Semester are:

School Newspaper and Debate, Cooking and Baking, Makers Space (building, inventions, sewing), Computer/Tech/Magic the Gathering (card game.)

Inquiry meets weekly from 12:45 - 1:30 except on the last Tuesday of the month which is Showcase.

Clubs extend the fun and learning. Parents interested in sharing a skill or interest with our students, please talk to Mary.
