NEXT SHOWCASE & TEAMBUILDING

MARCH 28

Showcase/Teambuilding is usually the last Wednesday of the month from 12:45 - 1:30!

Showcase is an opportunity for students to showcase something they have done, made, learned, shared with their peers.

DROP OFF/PICK UP POLICY

Drop Off/Pick up Policy: Just as a reminder, for safety reasons, student drop off/pick up is in the Green Acres parking area (go straight instead of turning into District Office/Tierra Pacifica/ Preschool lot). If you need to see that your student is getting to class or need to come on campus, please park in parking spaces available in either lot. (District Office or Green Acres)

Also, we ask that you honor the drop off and pick up times for each day. If you have special circumstances please check with Sue in advance. The staff uses the time before and after school to set up, clean up and have meetings with families. If you arrive to school early, please plan to stay with your child. Thank you for your cooperation.

Monday  9:30 to 1:30 (or 2:30 for students in Singing Club).  We ask that all parents walk your child in and come in to get them.

Tuesday 9:15 (Classes start at 9:30) to 1:30 or 2:30 (for students in Minecraft Club)

Wednesday 9:15 (Classes start at 9:30) to 1:30 or 2:30 (for students in After School Classes/Leadership events)

Thursday Spectra Art

Groupers, 11:30 to 1:00 (except Buddy Days and during Theater),

Sea Squirts & Urchins, 1:00 -3:00.

We also encourage families to use the site as a hub or hang out after school hours and only ask that you supervise your own children.

Ocean Alternative Health Policy

Let's all stay healthy. Please observe your child for symptoms of illness each day they plan to come to the center. Our health policy also applies to parents and staff.

Stay home if there are any signs of the following:

A fever of 100 degrees or more

A constant cough

Symptoms of illness including: low energy, aches, chills, etc.

Diarrhea/Vomiting more than once within the past 24 hours

Any contagious disease (please notify us)

Any illness or injury within the past 24 hours, which prohibits a child from actively participating in the program

If your child becomes sick while at the program, you or someone listed on your emergency card will be contacted to pick the child up immediately.

Thanks for you help!

Writer's Group with Joy

Wednesdays, 9:35 - 10:35

4/25:  All of the students have completed their research and began working on their rough drafts and final drafts.  We've only got 2 more weeks, after Testing Week next week, to complete the reports.  Please help your student keep working at home .  We will continue editing rough drafts on 5/9 and complete final drafts on 5/16.

Hopefully students will want to share their reports at our Authors' Celebration on our last class day May 23rd!

Please see past weeks' summaries on Joy's page.

Justin's Writing Focus Group

3/21/18 - The editing process can seem tedious and boring but it is an essential element in the writing process. Today we went over an editing checklist for our projects. ...more

Plot, Character, & Scenes: How to construct and deconstruct FICTION

We are looking at plot and how it operates across many stories: "Plot is a series of scenes that are deliberately arranged by cause and effect to create dramatic action filled with tension and conflict to further the character's emotional development."

—Martha Alderson, Blockbuster Plots Pure and Simple

We have looked at the three act structure and three important plot points: Inciting Incident, Crisis, and Climax. We will also be looking at the halfway point (point of no return), the dark night of the soul, and the resolution. I sent home a chapter called "The Universal Story." I highly recommend that the kids start looking at stories (books, movies) that they know well and try to identify where these plot points show up.

In class, we devised some characters from Magic cards, and we wrote (started) a scene where the character wants something, but things keep getting in the way. Next week we will write battle scenes. The following week, we'll all take a whack at revising a scene. For more information, go to Deb's Grouper Page.
